This major group includes establishments (e.g., farms, ranches, dairies, feedlots, egg production facilities, broiler facilities, poultry hatcheries, apiaries) primarily engaged in the keeping, grazing, or feeding of livestock for the sale of livestock or livestock products (including serums), for livestock increase, or for value increase. Livestock, as used here, includes cattle, hogs, sheep, goats, and poultry of all kinds; also included in this major group are animal specialties, such as horses, rabbits, bees, pets, fish in captivity, and fur-bearing animals in captivity.

An establishment primarily engaged in the production of livestock or livestock products (Major Group 02) is classified in the industry (four-digit) or industry group (three-digit) which accounts for 50 percent or more of the total value of sales for its agricultural production. If the total value of sales for agricultural products of an establishment is less than 50 percent from a single four-digit industry, but 50 percent or more of the value of sales for its agricultural products derives from the products of two or more four-digit industries within the same three-digit industry group.
